Supporting operators during field development to increase recoverable reserves

Hydrocarbon exploration and production requires thorough and detailed planning at all stages of activity. Once a successful exploration appraisal has been completed and before field production occurs, field development planning takes place.

When an operator reviews a field to develop for production, they will carefully consider all required steps to deliver the greatest likelihood for profitable, efficient and safe operations. Accurate field development plans will manage risks, overcome drilling uncertainty and ultimately support optimal production. 

This detailed period of work will traditionally see operators outline and address several metrics, including:

  • The planned number of wells required to be drilled to meet the field’s recovery objectives

  • The type of installations that will be used

  • Any third-party technology required to support activity

We are pleased to see that we are invited to work closely with an increasing number of customers during the field development stage. It’s here that we outline in-depth and tailored recommendations on the technology that Fishbones can provide. As an example, Fishbones is currently working with five operators in Norway on various field development projects scheduled between 2023-2027.

In a Norwegian Continental Shelf context, I think most people would agree that the easily accessible oil is now few and far between. Recoverable oil below the subsurface sits in challenging reservoirs that requires new technology to deliver production success.

Accessing complex wells and hard-to-reach reservoirs

With a significant number of installations in both clastics and carbonate reservoirs with excellent results, we have proven to be the stimulation leader for enhanced oil recovery solutions. Our technology demonstrably increases production rates and recovery in challenging oil and gas wells.

But while we can and do support underperforming, challenging wells, by working with us in the early stages of a project, we can go much further. At the early stages of field development, we can work alongside project engineers, managers and planners to ensure that our technology delivers the maximum recovery uplift. In the past few years, we have moved from making poor performing wells into okay wells, to making okay wells into high performing wells.

Our ambition is to unlock the full value from reservoirs and wells. Early partnership working with our customers during the field development stage sees us do just that, lowering risk and associated costs, while ensuring deep reservoir connectivity.

What’s more, our stimulation techniques require lower energy and resource consumption, which can help operators reduce their environmental impact.

Addressing challenges and problems before they arise

Now more than ever, the energy industry requires sustainable operations and cost-effective production methods. By working with our clients from the outset, we ensure a viable route to maximising assets while minimising costly processes.

I have long argued that our multi-lateral technology is playing a key role in driving increased efficiency in field development planning. Our solution makes it possible to reduce the total number of wells within a reservoir, while at the same time increasing the recoverable reserves. We are going a long way to support the future state of field development, most notably within fields with challenging reservoirs.

Working in partnership to deliver results

Our activity with Lundin Energy on the Edvard Grieg field perfectly illustrates the success that working together on field developments can deliver. Since 2012, we have worked closely to find the best method to deliver results on the Edvard Grieg field. Due in part to this close partnership approach, Lundin Energy recently announced that they had increased recovery by up to 50% from wells on the field and the overall reserves on Edvard Grieg have been increased by 17%.


As the industry looks towards sustainable operations within the context of increased recovery from oil and gas fields, our technology has been proven to provide a cost-effective solution that results in less environmental impact.

With hydrocarbon recovery increasingly taking place within challenging wells and reservoirs, detailed and accurate field development planning will become more important than ever.
